To be successful in the role of Senior Project Manager, one must be able to take charge of projects and see them through from start to finish with competence and assurance. Tasks include working with upper management and stakeholders to determine the project’s scope, objectives, and deliverables, as well as creating and disseminating comprehensive project plans that may include vendor and sub-contractor milestones. The Senior Project Manager is responsible for proactively coordinating with presales and project accounting to guarantee timely project procurement, billing, and financial management. The individual is also accountable for creating and delivering polished, complete, and accurate reports, proposals, requirements documentation, project documentation, and presentations.
The Senior Project Manager is responsible for proactively managing and communicating changes to the project’s scope, schedule, and cost, as well as identifying potential risks and developing contingency plans. The individual also works with resource managers to internal recruit the necessary personnel and develops an estimate of the resources and participants needed to complete the project.
In terms of managing the project team, the Senior Project Manager acts as a coach, mentor, motivator, and communicator of expectations, influencing team members and contractors to take initiative and ownership of their work. Work issues are reported to resource management and the PMO manager, if necessary. The senior project manager is also responsible for establishing, cultivating, and expanding business relationships that are critical to the accomplishment of the project and the development of future ventures.
Finally, based on lessons learned, the Senior Project Manager conducts post-mortems of completed projects, documents those findings in recommendation reports, and provides those documents to the PMO manager.
