What is Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) and how it can be improved?

To gauge the efficacy of a production line, analysts use a metric known as Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE). One may figure it out by multiplying the equipment’s availability, its performance, and the quality of the output.

The availability of a piece of equipment is a measure of how much time it is available for production. It is calculated by dividing the actual production time by the projected production time.

The rate at which a piece of equipment operates in relation to its maximal capacity is referred to as its “performance.” It is derived by dividing the actual production rate by the maximum production rate.

Quality is defined as the number of good products produced in relation to the overall number of products produced. It is computed by dividing the number of good products by the total number of products produced.

Improving any of these three areas will lead to a higher OEE. Improving the equipment’s reliability and decreasing the length of time it needs to be taken offline for maintenance or repairs are two approaches to raise availability. Equipment settings may be optimised, operator skills can be enhanced, and bottlenecks in the manufacturing process can be identified and removed to boost output. Inspections and tests can be used as quality control procedures to catch problems before they reach the consumer.

Overall Equipment Effectiveness (OEE) improvement can lead to more output, lower expenses, and happier clients.
